- Veronica takes a long, amused sip of her wine; her smile reaching her eyes: "This may spoil the surprise a bit; I actually have a small gift for you, dear." She opens a drawer in an end table and pulls out a small white box, about the size of a notebook. Lucy takes it and opens it up. Inside is a birth certificate and social security card bearing the false name "Lucy Fischer," along with Lucy's actual birthdate.
- "What is this?" Lucy asks with genuine confusion. I think I've figured out the implications of the documents, but I let Veronica explain her present. "I have a friend who works fairly high up at Social Security. He pulled a few strings and got these made up for you. You'll want to get a driver's license or passport with this new identity." Lucy figures it out: "So this means that Lee and I can legally get married! Thank you so much, Veronica!" Lucy jumps off the couch and wraps our drama teacher in a tight hug, nearly spilling her wine in the process."
- Veronica chuckles and hugs her back: "I'm glad you like it, dear." "You've done so much for us, Veronica, I wish there was some way we could repay you," I say. Lucy's joy at the thought of us marrying someday warms my heart. Our drama teacher flashes us a catlike smile: "Finish up your wine and come upstairs then."
